Frequently Asked Questions
Churchkhela by Chella™ is a traditional Georgian snack made by coating strings of whole nuts into thickened fruit juice and air-drying them until perfectly chewy. It’s a simple, satisfying, portable snack made with time-tested techniques.
Churchkhela is made from whole nuts, typically walnuts or hazelnuts, dipped in natural fruit juice thickened with a small amount of flour and slowly air-dried. That’s it. No fillers, no shortcuts. Just simple ingredients crafted the way food was before factories. Just fruit, nuts, and time.
We thread whole nuts onto a string, dip them into naturally thickened fruit juice, and hang to air-dry. Over time, the fruit coating firms into a naturally sweet, chewy outer layer that preserves the nuts inside.
Chella contains no artificial ingredients and no preservatives. Churchkhela is naturally sweetened by fruit juice, not refined sugar or syrup. Each Churchkhela contains about a spoonful of flour to thicken the fruit juice for coating. We keep it simple and honest, just as it’s always been made.
Chella is naturally preserved through air-drying and can be stored at room temperature. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. When stored properly, it stays fresh for several months. It’s ready to enjoy whenever and wherever you go.
Chella Strings provide the traditional experience--snack like a 3,000-years-ago! Start by holding the twine by the top. Gently pull to remove the natural food grade cotton/hemp twine from the chewy fruit coating. Then, wrap the twine around the bar and pull to slice bite-sized pieces — no knife needed. Savour each naturally sweet bite as part of this ancient ritual. Clean-label. Zero chemicals. 100% tradition.
Churchkhela is meant to be chewy and satisfying. The outer fruit layer may feel firm when first opened and can be slightly sticky; that’s completely natural.
Because it’s made with real ingredients and traditional methods, texture can vary slightly from batch to batch. Slice it into coins for the perfect balance of chew and crunch.
Simply remove the string, slice into bite-sized pieces, and savor. It’s that easy, and has been for generations.
Enjoy Chella anytime you want something naturally sweet and genuinely filling.
Eat it as morning fuel, an afternoon pick-me-up, on the trail, or shared on a grazing board. Churchkhela travels beautifully and is ready when you are.
